A coffee table is the one surface in the house that people sit around instead of walking past, which makes it worth more than ten minutes in December. It also has to stay usable. Somebody is putting a mug down on it.

We love to decorate for the holidays and as you may have guessed, we love to upcycle decor, blend in vintage or DIY. But we’re also not above an Amazon assist. And we also have an Etsy shop so if you need vintage glass, silver or brass and don’t want to hunt for it, you can just come sit by us. Whether you want to go modern, vintage, elegant or simple, we have ideas for every coffee table this holiday season.

How to Style a Christmas Coffee Table

A coffee table is styled from above, not from the side. That’s the whole difference between this and a console table. People look down at it from a sofa, so the arrangement has to hold together as a shape seen from overhead, and nothing can be so tall that it blocks the person across from you.

Keep everything under about 12 inches. Above that you’re talking around it.

Start with a tray. It gives the arrangement an edge, which is what keeps a coffee table from looking like objects that wandered onto it. It also means the whole thing lifts off in one motion when somebody wants to play cards. A silver gallery tray, a round silver platter, a wooden charger, a marble slab. Round tray on a round table, rectangular tray on a rectangular one.

Put the height in the middle. Candles, a small vase, a bottle brush tree. On a console you push the tall piece to one end. On a coffee table you center it, because there is no back.

Fill in low and around. Greenery tucked at the base, berries, pinecones, a few ornaments. This is the part that reads Christmas at a glance.

Leave a third of the table empty. Mugs, remotes, a book, somebody’s feet. A coffee table that has no clear surface left gets undecorated by whoever sits down first.

Rectangular and square tables take a long arrangement, not a centered one. Run a tray or a low garland down the middle third and leave both ends clear. A square coffee table is styled like a rectangle, not like a round one, because you still approach it from a side rather than from all around.

If your entry needs the same treatment, we covered it in Christmas entryway table decor, and the whole house is in our room by room Christmas guide.

Start with a vintage silver tray.

Christmas Coffee Table Decor Trays

The tray is doing more work than anything else on the table. It contains the arrangement, it protects the wood, and it makes the whole display portable.

Silver is the easiest to work with at Christmas because it reflects candlelight and it goes with red, green, white and gold without picking a side. A gallery tray with a pierced edge gives you a rim that holds greenery in place. A plain round platter gives you a cleaner base for a candle grouping.

Size it to the table. A tray should take up somewhere between a third and half the table’s surface. Smaller and it looks lost, larger and you have nowhere to put a drink.

If you want two levels, put a small footed bowl or a short cake stand inside the tray and build around it. That gets you height without a tall object.

For the base layer: cedar or fir laid flat around the objects, then berries and pinecones tucked into the gaps. Loose greenery is easier than a garland because you can push it where you need it.

We use a silver gallery tray with pegged votives in chamber stick holders.

The same tray works on a sofa table, a side table, an end table or a kitchen island. Nothing about the arrangement changes except the shape you build it in.

Round Coffee Table Christmas Decor

A round table is the one case where you build for every angle, because people sit all the way around it.

That means no front. Whatever you put in the middle has to look finished from four sides, which rules out anything with a clear face like a framed sign or a nativity scene facing one direction.

Steal the look: Grab the red and green Lenox votives here and the cranberry syrup bottle here. Be sure to also check out the cranberry cut glass vase here and this crystal bowl here.

Round tables also take a scatter better than a tray does. Three or four objects placed directly on the wood, at different heights, with space between them, works where it would look messy on a rectangle. Group them slightly off center rather than dead middle.

Vintage glass is good for this because the colors read from any direction. A pressed glass bowl of pinecones, a pair of colored pegged votives, a cut glass vase with fir and berries, a striped pitcher. The objects do the work and you skip the greenery base entirely.

Keep one clear quadrant for mugs.

Colored pegged votives in red and green will carry Christmas without any greenery at all.

Modern Christmas Coffee Table Decor

Modern means fewer objects and one material family. A marble or glass top, a metal tray, and three things on it.

Pick one metal and stay in it. Silver with clear glass, or brass with amber. Mixing metals is fine in a room and busy on a tray.

Greenery in a modern arrangement goes in one direction rather than surrounding everything. A single eucalyptus or cedar stem laid across the tray does more than a ring of fir.

Neutral and white versions live here too. Reliable neutral Christmas colors for a coffee table are white, cream, clear glass, silver and green, with the tree shapes and the candles carrying the season. You can add a little red or skip it. White bottle brush trees instead of green, clear or silver ornaments instead of colored, milk glass instead of anything painted.

Three white pillars of different heights on a round silver tray is the whole arrangement. It takes ten minutes and it works in any room.

Try milk glass for the neutral version.

Vintage Christmas Coffee Table Decor

Vintage on a coffee table is about surface. People are looking at these objects from two feet away, closer than anything on a mantel or a dining table, so cut glass, pressed patterns, mercury finish and tarnished silver all show up properly here in a way they don’t across a room.

We used red pegged votives here on a silver tray, and a vintage sleigh. Grab the look in our Etsy shop!

A glass sleigh filled with pinecones or ornaments is the piece that makes the arrangement obviously Christmas without a single new purchase. Bottle brush trees in mixed heights fill in around it. Mercury glass ornaments loose on the tray catch candlelight.

Silver chamber stick holders with colored pegged votives give you height and period at once. Red votives on silver is the most direct version. Green works if the rest of the table is neutral. Put the whole thing on a silver platter or charger over a doily — makes it read as collected.

Red pegged votives and a silver platter are the two pieces this version needs. Farmhouse versions work the same way with different materials. Stoneware instead of glass, a wooden dough bowl instead of a silver tray, plaid instead of velvet.

Simple Christmas Coffee Table Decor

Three candles on a round tray, greenery around the base, done.

That’s the whole section and it’s the version most people actually want. Three pillars at different heights, one tray, whatever greenery you have. Add berries if you want red without buying anything red.

Vary the heights but keep them close. Three candles at 8, 6 and 4 inches looks intentional. Three at 12, 6 and 3 looks like three separate decisions.

Real flame or flameless both work. If the table is where people put drinks down, flameless with a timer is the practical answer, and nobody can tell from a photo anyway.

Elegant Christmas Coffee Table Decor

Elegant on a coffee table means better materials rather than more of them, same as anywhere else. Cut glass instead of pressed. Sterling or good plate instead of stainless. A stone or marble surface under everything.

Crystal is worth the trouble here specifically because of the viewing distance. Cut glass sends light in a way that only shows up close, and a coffee table is the closest most people get to a decorative object in their house.

Two matched pieces are the shortcut. A pair of candlesticks, a pair of small bowls, a pair of votive holders. Symmetry reads as deliberate.

Keep the palette to two things. Silver and white. Gold and green. Adding a third color is where elegant turns into festive. A pair of brass candlesticks or a silver bowl will do it.

Small Coffee Table Christmas Decor

On a small table, the tray is the whole arrangement. One tray, two or three objects inside it, nothing outside it.

You can sometimes find a marble round top like this as either part of a lazy susan, or even upcycle a marble topped round end table (yes, we have seen them curbside). Or swap out for a silver platter. We used a vintage milk compote and filled with silver balls. And then completed the look with a silver candleholder and a clear pegged votive candle holder.

A 12 inch round tray with two votives and a small bowl of ornaments is complete. Adding a fourth object to a small table is where it stops looking styled and starts looking crowded.

Skip the greenery base on a small table. It eats the surface you don’t have. Put a single short stem of cedar or a few berries inside the tray instead.

If the table is also the only surface in the room, keep half of it clear rather than a third. The decor has to lose that argument.

A few pegged votives will fit where pillars won’t.

Rustic Christmas Coffee Table Decor

Rustic runs on wood, iron and texture. A dough bowl instead of a tray, a wooden slice under the candles, galvanized metal, burlap or wool underneath.

A long wooden dough bowl down the center of a rectangular table is the whole arrangement. Fill it with pinecones, greenery, a few ornaments and two or three candles.

Brass and iron both work here but so does silver, especially with bleached woods. So do oil lamps, which are the one light source on this list that was a working object before it was decor.

Plaid is a fun option on the table as ribbon, or on a throw underneath the table or a runner under the arragnement rather than in the arrangement itself.

A vintage oil lamp or brass candlesticks will anchor it.

DIY Christmas Coffee Table Decor

Three of ours work on a coffee table specifically, because they all sit low and look right from above.

Gold leaf ornaments. Old glass balls leafed on the outside. A coffee table is the best place for these because you see the leaf up close instead of from across a room. Loose on a tray or piled in a bowl.

Bleached pinecones. Pale instead of brown, which is what makes them work in a modern or neutral arrangement rather than only a rustic one. Read more in the blog on Bleached pinecones.

Pine cone fire starters. Dipped in wax with a twine wick. In a bowl on the coffee table they look like decor, and if you have a fireplace in the same room they’re also functional. Pine cone fire starters.

All three fill the same container, so one bowl of mixed leafed ornaments, bleached cones and wax cones is a complete centerpiece.

After Christmas Coffee Table Decor

The coffee table is the first surface people want back in January, and it’s also the easiest one to transition rather than strip.

Pull the ornaments, the bottle brush trees and anything red. Leave the tray, the candles and the greenery. Swap fir for eucalyptus or bare branches if the fir has dried out.

What’s left reads as winter rather than leftover Christmas, and it holds until March without anyone deciding it’s still up.

Bleached pinecones stay through January. They were never Christmas specific, which is the argument for making them pale in the first place.
